Most cough episodes will clear up or significantly improve within two weeks. A cough that lasts between 3 and 8 weeks is a subacute cough. A persistent cough that lasts more than eight weeks is a chronic cough.

The most common cause of a cough is a respiratory tract infection, such as a cold or flu. For young children, a common cause of cough is asthma. For smokers, there can be chronic cough with a distinctive sound.

1.Take honey and lemon

Honey and lemon which will ease cough and encourage healing.

Mix 1 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp honey and 1/2 cup of hot water and drink.

Do not give honey to children under 12 months of age because of the risk of infant botulism poisoning.

2.Take ginger and peppermint

Peppermint helps eliminate mucus and buildup in your respiratory tracts. Ginger is often used to soothe sore throats and reduce coughing, especially those caused by the common cold. Ginger lozenges and other medicinal products are commercially designed with the express purposed of treating coughs.

3.Take onion soup

Onion strengthens the immune system, work as natural anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories, and contains expectorants that loosen up mucus so you can cough it up. It works like garlic but in a milder form, makes it more suitable for small children.

4.Take garlic and honey

The allicin present in garlic possesses antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic properties which relieves cough.

Mince or finely chop up six cloves of fresh, raw garlic. Mix the garlic together with one cup of local honey in a saucepan. Cook on low heat for two minutes. Take one teaspoon twice a day.

5.Drink licorice root tea

Licorice root is both an expectorant and demulcent, simultaneously soothing your airways while loosening and thinning mucus, easing congestion. It can also ease any inflammation that may be irritating your throat.

6.Inhale steam

Inhaling steam helps flush out mucus, and it moisturizes dry, irritated air passageways.

Pour boiling water into a bowl and stir the water to produce heat steam. Breathe deeply into the steam. You can use a towel to cover your head to trap the steam. Be careful not to get too close to be burnt by the steam.

7.Drink ginger soup

Ginger relieves sore throat, non-stop coughing and even congestion.

Crush fresh ginger and boil with water and drink it like soup.

Taking ginger might increase your risk of bleeding and lower your blood sugar. Use caution if you have bleeding or blood sugar related conditions.

8.Inhale eucalyptus oil

Eucalyptus oil has a soothing and calming effect on the respiratory system, which can help alleviate a cough.

Inhale essential oil of eucalyptus. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer and breathe in, make sure your eyes are closed.

9.Drink lots of fluids

Drinking lots of fluids is a great way to help relieve a cough, since fluids make the mucus easier to cough up.

Warm liquids or water at room temperature work best. However, caffeine or alcohol should be avoided since they are diuretics, which cause you to urinate more often and actually lose more fluids than you gain.

10.Take cloves

Cloves contain phenolic compounds including eugenol and gallic acid which are anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Cloves not only relieve a sore throat but also alleviate pain caused due to persistent coughing.
